Kalanchoe
beharensis (Propagation) 6 April, 2003, Sunningdale
On
the 1 December, while I was photographing Kalanchoe
beharensis(Crassulaceae family) I broke off one
of the mature leaves by accident. I knew that one propagated
this species from leaves but had never tried it, so I left
the leaf on a table. In a month or so, there were one or two
thread like roots showing from the broken end of the leaf
stem. I then forgot about it for another couple of months
when to my amazement it had started to grow new leaves. It
is now 4 months since the leaf was broken off and some new
roots are now beginning to grow. I think it is about time
I planted it!!! Of course many plants are propagated from
leaf cuttings such as African Violets, but for the leaf to
last so long in such a fresh state really surprised me.
