Pterocactus kuntzei K. Schumann

Colour photograph of this, the most widespread species from Rio Negro in the south to Salta in the north, Patagonia. Many different forms exist. Most of the slender stems become detached during winter. If grown in full sun, the new growth will flower profusely in spring and summer. Flowers are a pale to deep yellow and the stigma can be from almost white, pink to deep red.
Certainly the most well known species in cultivation. (P. tuberosus and P. decipiens are synonyms)
