Phlomis 'Edward Bowles'

Phlomis ‘Edward Bowles’

Raised and named by Hilliers in 1967, allegedly from seed of E. A. Bowles (who however, died in 1954). Has been said to be a hybrid between P. russeliana (herbaceous) and P. fruticosa (shrub), but at the moment its provenance is ‘not proven’

Shrub to 1˝ m. All parts with stellate hairs. Leaves bright green above, silvery white beneath, elongated heart-shaped, narrowly rimmed in white from stellate hairs beneath, to 20 × 11 cm; petiole to 12 cm.  Floral leaves lanceolate to ovate, 5.8-11.7 × 2.1-8.5 cm, petiole to 1 cm.  Flowering stems bearing up to 4 whorls per stem. Whorls 7 - 8 cm across. Bracteoles 16-22 × 3-6 mm, single or joined in groups, acuminate. Calyx to 18 mm, teeth to 5 mm, held horizontally. Corolla, 27-32 mm, two toned, upper lip cream, lower lip golden yellow. Central lobe of lower lip to 20 mm across. Nutlets hairless. Hardy to -15°C
