Distribution in the wild:
China, former USSR (Central Asia, Siberia), in alpine and
forest zones, in meadows.
Flowering in the wild: June-August
alpina means of alpine regions.
Much smaller than P. tuberosa and without its large tubers,
but with thickened roots. Leaves are much smaller than P.
tuberosa and flowering stems are unbranched.
Herbaceous perennial 20-50 cm. string-like roots. Basal
leaves ovate, cordate at base, 13-15 × 10 cm; petioles
longer than lamina. Stem leaves ovate-oblong to linear-lanceolate,
10 × 3-5 cm. Upper stem leaves short petioled. Lower
floral leaves ovate-oblong or oblong-lanceolate, with rounded
teeth at margin, 7-11 × 2-4 cm. Upper floral leaves
linear-lanceolate, with obtuse teeth or entire at margin,
covered on both sides with scattered 1-jointed hairs. Many
whorls per unbranched stem which is almost hairless at bottom
and covered with soft retrorse or stellate hairs above.
Bracteoles slightly incurved, narrowly linear, 9-11 mm,
clothed with long spreading multi-articulate hairs. Calyx
campanulate; teeth rounded-ovate terminating in a subulate
point, 2-3 mm. Corolla pink. Nutlets hairy at apex.
